3D-Converted ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ Returns To Theaters In Summer 2016

Next summer will mark 25 years since “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” hit the big screen, and it’s still the biggest and baddest of the franchise, and in my opinion the best too. You might think the anniversary would offer a prime opportunity to show how the movie hasn’t aged a day and how, two decades later, the groundbreaking special effects of the time still stand up. But nah, producers are going in a different direction.

DMG Entertainment, Studiocanal and James Cameron have announced a 3D-converted theatrical re-release for ‘Judgement Day,’ supervised by the director himself, who says, “If you’ve never seen it, this’ll be the version you want to see and remember.”

Well, if you’ve never seen ‘Terminator 2,’ I can’t argue against seeing it on the big screen — but the movie wasn’t shot with 3D in mind, so I can’t image how this is version is any more new and improved over the already excellent 2D film. But it does underscore Cameron’s full and total embrace of the format.

There’s no exact release date set just yet, but the occasion will mark the first time “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” will play on the big screen in the industry’s most important new market: China. And that’s probably half the reason this 3D conversion is happening in the first place. [Deadline]
