First Trailer For Survival Epic 'Alpha' Journeys Home

Next spring, just as winter is winding down, the action will be heating up with “Alpha” (formerly known as “The Solutrean”), a survival epic about a young caveman struggling against the elements to find his way home. Set 20,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, the film comes from director Albert Hughes, marking his first solo effort outside of directing as part of The Hughes Brothers (“The Book of Eli,” “From Hell”).

Filmed in IMAX 3D, “Alpha” seems positioned to be a more eyepopping, less prestigious version of “The Revenant,” certainly without the same level of star power. The movie features a relatively modest cast, including Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jóhannes Haukur Johannesson, Jens Hultén, Natasha Wilson,Marcin Kowalczyk, and Spencer Bogaert.

If the formula works, we could be in store for an even greater onslaught of projects about man versus weather conditions that take place a long, long time ago. But first, we’ll have to wait and see if audiences will pour in.

“Alpha” opens on March 2, 2018.
