Boy Sets Fire-The Misery Index: Notes from the Plague Years
Equal Vision
March 7, 2006

Boy Sets Fire has gone through a remarkable journey of highs and lows in the past few years that has seen them go from a much talked about band to a "what the hell happened to them?" band. Luckily, their first album in three years resets the bar for Boy Sets Fire that people thought had diminished with the release of Tomorrow Comes Today (which isn't a bad album).

The music is typical Boy Sets Fire: emotional hardcore with searing guitar parts and a hard hitting rhythm section that paves the way for the intense and melodic (yet always distinguishable) vocals of Nathan Gray. The songs can be eye watering or fist pumping, and it all fits pretty well (although the horns in "So Long...Thanks for the Crutches" seems like an odd thing for Boy Sets Fire to do).

While I doubt this album will have the impact that After the Eulogy did, it does remind people that Boy Sets Fire are back and up to par with their previous work. I fear that they will run into the same problems that The Juliana Theory had (which ultimately led to their demise), but I sincerely hope not, as Boy Sets Fire has been a very important band to me. I will never forget buying After the Eulogy the day a great friend died in a car accident and just getting lost in Gray's voice, in deep and saddened thought.
