Cryptopsy-The unspoken Kings

Dear Cryptopsy,

I am letting my rage subside to write you an open and honest letter about your new album, The unspoken Kings. It starts off amazingly, with the first three tracks, everything I'd expect in a Cryptopsy album. The drumming of Flo Mounier is, as expected, jaw dropping. His speed is out of this world, and the slower tempos that you throw into these songs, while more than previous albums, lets him show off his chops even more. Plus, I it seems that the band is never that far away from a blast beat. I enjoy the many voices of Matt McGachy, and he uses them well.

At the second "Silence the Tyrants," something strange happens. It opens like a Korn song, and then McGachy starts singing, sounding similar to Layne Stanley of Alice in Chains. Yes, thats better than a lot of the whiny singing currently taking over heavy music, but it came very unexpected to me, and I am still a upset about it, especially since singing is the absolute last thing that a band like Cryptopsy should be doing. What makes it worse is that the trend continues pretty much throughout the album, leaving me shocked, saddened and questioning everything I ever thought I knew.

I would like to know why you thought singing would be a good idea? I'm sure you wrote this album knowing that certain fans would be outraged and that you would answer their cries with rhetoric of writing songs for yourselves or maturation or other cliche reasons. With a band as talented as you are, this is a step backwards. While I respect your right to experiment, I wholeheartedly disagree with the finished product, minus the first three songs and some wonderful vintage Cryptopsy parts scattered throughout the rest of The unspoken Kings.

Sincerely,

The Playlist
