Gaslight Anthem do something pretty cool on Sink or Swim: they successfully blend the sad, depressive side of alt country rock and roll with the youthful energy of punk rock and roll. This album will let the listeners either stew over things gone wrong with eyes held low or dance and sing the night away either solo or with a group of friends. They are able to make every song an energetic anthem.
The contrast of vocals and music is truly outstanding on here. The music take pages from Social Distortion or Against Me! and mix it with Lucero like vocals. Brian Fallon's voice, sad yet hopeful and with a nice southern twang to it, is the centerpiece of this band. His lyrics are top notch and thoughtful, and his phrasing is outstanding.
This debut is more than strong enough to get people talking. These guys seem to have all the tools to be around for awhile, climbing the mountain of success, and making people eager for more from this band.
