Gojira are a technical, mathy metal band that sound like a Mac truck speeding down a deserted highway in the middle of the night. They don't feel the need to follow any set formula, and they would absolutely abolish you if you got in their way.
The oddest aspect of Way of All Flesh is how quickly these songs fly by. Granted, "The Silver Cord" is only two minutes and 32 seconds, but there's only one other song that clocks in at under four minutes. They have a nine minute song, a seven minute one, two six minute songs, three five minute and three four minute songs. This may sound daunting, but Gojira keep things interesting enough for the listener not to be bogged down with the song length. They have a lot going on during each song, but nothing is overbearing.
The guitar and drum interplay is the stronghold of this album. Their use of syncopation works really well, as nearly everything could be a breakdown, and they each add their own quirks to keep ahead of other bands playing the same style. The addition of Joe Duplantier's deep vocals bring a lot to the table, giving them some downright frightening moments at times, which makes them even better.
This is a band that has turned some heads, and The Way of All Flesh will turn some more. This is a talented four piece with a hell of a live show, playing metal by their own rules.
