Gwar-Lust in Space
Metal Blade
August 18, 2009

I can't think of many people out there that haven't at least heard of Gwar and their eccentric live show. I had the luxary of seeing them perform a few times, and always left impressed by the theatrics, which always seemed to take priority over the music. The music, to me, didn't really matter as I was watching them basically put on a musical for metalheads, something that is worthy of praise in itself. The only recorded song I heard from them before Lust in Space was their 30 second track off of Short Music for Short Attention Spans, which surprised me because it was more melodic than I was expecting.

Lust in Space follows the musical formula that I previously heard from them, with the exception of obviously longer songs (ranging from 3-6 minutes in length). Their lyrics are over the top, but take the listener on a journey to a distant galaxy that only Gwar could create, reminding me of the episode of South Park where having a cat spray took characters to this trippy land with big breasted everything and some other strange things (this was based on a movie or TV show I never saw), except much more evil and about a 90% chance of blood.

Describing Gwar is a pretty tough task, as they are pretty far out there. Melodic metal rock and roll with a focus on all things odd and theatric is the best thing I can come up with, but this is a unique band. Lust in Space is a pretty enjoyable album, surprisingly catchy, and I'm sure they'll have some crazy material lined up for their live show.
