My Heart to Joy-Seasons in Verse
Topshelf Records
April 10, 2009

You can tell when a band is sincere about what they do. Its almost a sixth sense, but its obvious in the music. Some bands just go through the motions, while others put their heart and soul into every note. My Heart to Joy falls into the latter category, making Seasons in Verse an album that blows my mind each time I listen to it.

Experimenting with a sound that crosses Hot Water Music with Gravity Records' bands, My Heart to Joy is onto something. Its not exactly a new sound, but its an endangered one and they are adding some new touches that tickle my ears. The music shouts at me, with melodic guitar lines (never a bad riff-the guitarwork stands out in a glorious way) and syncopated drums. The vocals, which I wouldn't consider great but work so well with this band, add the extra layer of emotion, giving the crowd something to sing along with.

My Heart to Joy sounds like a band you would find playing to a bearded crowd at a VFW Hall or somebody's basement. They seem like the type of band that would offer you the shirts off their back in exchange for nothing but a thank you. I could be wrong; but that's what is portrayed in Seasons in Verse.
