I was truly expecting to hate this, as A Fever You Can't Sweat Out was not good at all, full of terrible emo pop songs that blew them up bigger than a hot air balloon on steroids. Pretty.Odd. saw them growing up, or at least listening to The Beatles as much, if not more than, Fall Out Boy. This album shows a certain amount of maturity which may alienate some of their just post-tween fanbase, but may appeal to a surprised older crowd. They could also serve as a bonding point between kids and their classic rock loving, Beatles obsessed parents, which would make the live crowd a site to see.
While this album isn't a non stop slam dunk, Panic at the Disco show songs of brilliance. Their use of piano, horns and orchestration give them, at times, an old timey feel, which is something that I'm very fond of; moreso than The Beatles influence. The first single, "9 in the Afternoon," shows the step that the band is taking while not sounding all that far off from their debut album. Other knock out gems include, "Northern Downpour," "Behind the Sea," "She Had the World" and "From a Mountain in the Middle of the Cabins." I doubt this album will sell as well as their debut, but its a much stronger album overall; something they can be quite proud of.
