Scott Kelly-The Wake

May 6, 2008

I don't know who followed in whose footsteps, but I think its pretty cool that Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly borh released solo albums on the same day. They are both in the vein of singer songwriter with country influences, while having a different style to them.

Kelly has a very slow, dreary style to his music. Everything sounds so carefully placed and pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle, all paving the way for his Tom Waits style vocals. He has a very deep, almost growl to him; very throaty and very haunting. Kelly's voice alone gives this album a feeling of beautifully played uncomfortable terror.

Kelly proves that you can do a lot with a guitar and a voice. There is never a dull moment on here, even if this album takes a little time to grow on the listener. There are plenty of audio treasures to be had while listening to The Wake.
