Sharks Come Cruisin'-Four Years Before the Mast
Self Released
March 1, 2008

I'm on my fourth or five straight listen of this six song EP full of sea shanties that combine folk music and punk rock. The songs all have a great sing along factor, and have an instant funness that makes it almost impossible to listen to anything else.

A lot of people have called these guys (including me at one point) "pirate punk rock." People sometimes go to their shows dressed as pirates, but that is not an accurate description of their sound. They sing songs that remind me of an American Flogging Molly played by sailors during the time when pirates ruled the seas. Each song is so catchy, and Mark Lambert's voice, along with all the sing along parts, fit the music so well, making the songs as lovable as they are.

Though each song is great a blast to listen to, "Bully in the Alley," and "All For Me Grog" are my two favorites. Both are instant classics that people will be singing along to by the second chorus. Each of the six songs on this EP have a ton of energy, including the ballad closer, "Santy Anno," which starts off slow but builds up into a great ending. The musicianship is tight and full of interesting parts, helped out by the fiddle, banjo, mandolin and accordian, in addition to the guitar, drums and bass that keep things solid (especially the drums).

Its good to hear that Rhode Island has a brand of this caliber band. Sharks Come Cruisin' are easily on the same playing field as bands like Flogging Molly, The Pogues and The Tossers, minus the Irishness. People who like songs to sing along to, or songs about the sea, will love this. I truly hope that this band makes it.
