Sons of Azrael-Scouting the Boneyard
Ironclad
January 19, 2010
I can't read the name Azrael without thinking of Gargamel's cat from The Smurfs. That poor kitty had such a rough time at the hands of those damn Smurfs. I always felt bad for him, even though I never wanted him to get what he was after.
Sons of Azrael could serve as a soundtrack to the evil that goes on in Gargamel's lair (last Smurf reference, I swear). They have a demonic, hate filled sound, with very dark images coming to mind as they slam through their songs. Vocalist Joe Siracuse has a very harsh voice that sounds akin to his black metal peers. He's got a deep voice and a high voice, and they are both wretched. The music backing him up is a mixture of death metal, grind, techical hardcore. Its nothing amazingly original, but it serves its purpose, is fast, and lets Siracuse take over and shine.
This is an album that will appeal to fans of the heavy music genre, though they may get lost in the shuffle. There are a lot of bands out there and I'm not sure if Sons of Azrael really stand out to me. They are good at what they do and have written a respectable album, but thats where it ends. J
