Soul Control-Cycles
Bridge 9
August 25, 2009

I've always had mixed feelings about Soul Control. I wasn't a huge fan of the recorded songs I heard but I enjoyed them live, though not every time. Because of this, I was very interested in hearing Cycles. I wanted to know which way my feelings would turn, and they swung me to the pro side.

They remind me of a mixture between Snapcase, bands that you would expect to be on the Bridge 9 roster (aka: modern hardcore that thinks outside the box), with a sense of Modern Life is War. They play a sincere style of hardcore while still having fun behind their respective instruments. There is some impressive instrumentation, especially in the guitar noodling category, and vocalist Rory Van Grol gives the songs that right amount of flare and aggression.

With the strength of Cycles, I'm pretty confident that I'm not the only person that Soul Control is going to win over. These guys are on a good path, a path that not many other bands are taking right now. Expect to hear this rhyming band name a lot more often in the future.
