A lot of frontmen have been taking the singer/songwriter reigns lately, which basically (usually) is a departure in sound from their actual bands. Steve Von Till, frontman for Neurosis, has released an album that isn't all that much different from said band. Granted, these songs are acoustic and somewhat country (for lack of a better term) influenced, but this album is full of ambiance and brooding moments that you can easily get lost in.
This album features a lot of atmosphere, and Von Till's voice fits the slow strumming of the guitars so perfectly well. He sounds like a less gruff Tom Waits at his more depressing moments. His voice is soothing, comforting in its misery, as he sings lullabies to those in the gutter. Every note or hit from the music is played with an incredible amount of precision, perfectly placed and fitting each moment.
This is a damn good effort here by Von Till. These songs do exactly what they were meant to: evoke grim lullaby emotion for those down on their luck. This is a beautiful album from start to finish.
