Alejandro G. Innarritu Raves About ‘The Shape Of Water’

Any fan of Guillermo del Toro will tell you that a del Toro film is truly unique. Even when he’s part of an existing franchise like with his film “Blade II,” he’s able to infuse enough of his unmistakable creature effects and creativity to elevate a film that features Wesley Snipes as a comic book vampire hunter. So, when you hear that there’s an amazing film that is a love story featuring a fish person, there’s really no doubt in your mind who the filmmaker is behind the story.

The Shape of Water” is that fish person love story, but it’s also so much more. As the awards season kicks into full gear, del Toro’s beautiful film is starting to get some serious recognition. In Variety’sDirectors on Directors” feature, “The Shape of Water” is getting praise from a pretty incredible source, director Alejandro G. Inarritu – best known for “Birdman” and “The Revenant.”

“Shape of Water” is a love letter to love and a love declaration for cinema. Guillermo has changed the paradigm of the monster tale because no monster or princess has to change. The only real transformation comes from within, by loving and accepting each other as they are,” says Inarritu.

What Inarritu notices is that a film, produced in such a high-quality way, can only come from the mind of Guillermo del Toro. He says, “Because there are films that, a little better or a little worse, any director can make. But there are others that can only exist if they are created or directed by only one director in the world.” There’s no denying that sentiment. Can you imagine this script in the hands of Michael Bay?

Ultimately, what makes Inarritu so over the moon about “The Shape of Water” is just how amazing it is that this film actually was made. “Like some of the literature from Haruki Murakami, Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Shape of Water’ is a delight of fantasy and a miracle. It exists in our reality,” he concludes.

We couldn’t agree more. “The Shape Of Water” is now playing.
