Andrea Arnold To Direct HBO's 'Big Little Lies' Season 2

If you asked me yesterday if “Big Little Lies” needed a second season, I would’ve said without hesitation, “No.” The show, initially a limited series, was a perfectly formed story with an ending that left a slight cliffhanger, but the storylines resolved. Well, popular demand has spoken and a second season is coming, and God help me, I’m going to have to watch.

Deadline reports that Andrea Arnold has been tapped to direct all seven episodes of the forthcoming season. This is a big leap for The Playlist fave behind “Fish Tank,” “Wuthering Heights,” and “American Honey,” who leaps into Hollywood with the biggest project of her career by some margin. Season one director, Jean-Marc Vallée, is sticking around in a producing role. Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern are all expected to return….wait, Alexander Skarsgard? Isn’t his character dead? Does this mean more flashbacks? I’m trying to stay positive about this, but…

As fans know, the first season ended with police keeping an eye (through binoculars!) on the women who conspired to cover up a murder. So, are we going to see a more “True Detective“-y second season? Will Andrea Arnold rope in a rat-tail wearing Shia LaBeouf into the cast? (Please!). Will there be another Elvis impersonator contest? We’ll know soon!

David E. Kelley is back, writing all seven scripts, partially based on a story from author Liane Moriarty. No word yet on when filming will begin, but it’s certainly going to be in 2018, which means you’re probably looking at 2019 for the return of these characters.
