Apple Orders New Sci-Fi Series From 'X-Men' Mastermind Simon Kinberg

Apple’s upcoming streaming service is still, as the tech folks say, “vaporware” (aka not an actual product, yet) but that isn’t stopping the massive corporation from continuing to purchase new content that will eventually infect cell phones around the globe. And for its latest foray in TV, the tech giant has enlisted one of Hollywood’s most high-profile producers, Simon Kinberg.

Deadline is reporting that Kinberg, along with co-writer David Weil, has signed a deal to write and produce a 10-episode science fiction series for Apple. There’s no title for the series yet, but it’s being loosely described as a big-budget, ambitious, and character-driven genre show. Whatever that means.

Apple is banking on the fact that Kinberg is the mastermind behind Fox’s “X-Men” franchise, and is the writer-director of the upcoming (presumed swansong) “Dark Phoenix.” He’s also bracing to begin production on his spy thriller, “355,” which has an all-female cast led by the incomparable Jessica Chastain.

Weil has recently been in the news as one of the writers for the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series “The Hunt,” which is being produced by Jordan Peele and stars none other than Al Pacino alongside Logan Lerman.

As mentioned, the upcoming Apple streaming service has yet to be formally announced and the details are scarce. What is known at this time is that Apple is looking to give the TV content it’s producing away for free to existing customers by allowing them access on the Apple device of their choosing. This is the leading reason that speculation says the content being produced by the streaming service will be relegated to PG and light PG-13 fare.

There’s no release date for this upcoming, untitled series, but we’re sure we’ll hear more about it in the coming months, as Apple’s TV plans come into focus.
