Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks The Problem With Sequels, Says No 'Predator' Followup Has Been "Satisfactory" To Fans

PredatorWe discussed at length yesterday, Not All Sequels Are Created Equal & Not Every Hit Movie Deserves To Be A Franchise, but as we know, Hollywood is always looking for new ways to put a fresh spin on ideas that might seem completely worn out. This past week, "Terminator Genisys" flopped into cinemas, with even the director admitting the internal logic of the timeline warping reboot of sorts, wasn’t easy to follow. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been stumping hard for the sequel, dismissing "Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines" and especially "Terminator Salvation," with the narrative being that ‘Genisys’ is the true followup to "Terminator 2: Judgement Day." And while the quality of ‘Genisys’ is certainly debateable, Arnie is quite aware of the pitfalls of followups.

Taking part in a Reddit Q&A following a screening of ‘Genisys,’ the actor was asked about the brewing "Predator" reboot that Shane Black will write and direct, and Arnie used the opportunity to give his view of the franchise so far and how the sequels have fared.

“Sometimes studios do a great job at creating sequels, and sometimes they really screw it up bad. And it all has to do with greed. Sometimes they want to do it really cheap, and make as much money as possible, so they don’t hire the right cast, or the right director. And other times they want to rush it, because they want to have it come out next spring, even though now it’s already fall,” he said. “So far, no ‘Predator’ [movie], no matter which one they did after the first one, has been satisfactory to the audience. So I hope if Shane Black does another one, this one will be great."

And Arnie believes the potential is there for another good "Predator" movie, though he emphasizes he has not been asked to return. “[Shane Black is] a very talented guy, and a great, great director, so if he would do it, it will become a great, great movie whether I’m in it or not,” he said, noting that Black punched up the script on the first movie, including a handful of his lines.

The whole talk is pretty interesting and you can check it out in full below, with Arnie discussing James Cameron (who he won’t be reteaming with anytime soon thanks to "Avatar"), "Triplets," and more. [Scified]
