This has been a crazy quarter, full of loss, a disappointing Cubs' season and a ton of great music to listen to. I had a hard time narrowing this great crop of CDs down to a top five, and I have a feeling that a good amount of these albums will be mentioned again at the end of the year.
5. Scout's Honor-I am the Dust: This is a surprise hit that wasn't really a surprise at all. I knew Scout's Honor had a lot of talent and potential, but this album just blew me away. Never have I heard a band pull off such an array of styles so successfully. (No Idea)
4. Murder by Death-In Bocca al Lupo: This album proves that Murder by Death is here to stay. Their unique take on music is refreshing and a damn good time to listen to. This is an album worthy of many repeat listens. (East West/Tent Show Records)
3. NOFX-Wolves in Wolves' Clothing: This is their best album since Punk in Drublic. The songs are catchy and NOFX prove that they can be good while not giving a fuck. (Fat Wreck)
2. Ignite-Our Darkest Days: I was very excited to hear this after a six year wait, and it was well worth it. They are still churning out great melodic punk rock with a message, and Zoli Teglas' voice is still one of the best in all of music. (Abacus)
1. Bouncing Souls-The Gold Record: How can anyone listen to this album and not fall in love with it? This is one of the most uplifting albums I have ever heard, and it came at a time when I needed it most. (Epitaph)
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Cellador-Enter Deception; Dresden Dolls-Yes, Virginia; Jesu-Silver; Lair of the Minotaur-The Ultimate Destroyer; Lucero-The Attic Tapes; Misery Index-Discordia; None More Black-This is Satire; The Warriors-Beyond the Noise
I would also like to give special attention to two albums: Thursday's A City by the Light Divided and Taking Back Sunday's Louder Now. Both of these albums are good, but I find myself never listening to them. Its odd that these two albums could easily be on this list except for the fact that I neglect to listen to them. I need to spin these albums more.
