Belfast, Dune, Succession Among 2022 PGA Awards Nominees

The Producers Guild of America announced the film and television nominees for the 2022 PGA Awards and it was a banner day for Netflix. Three of the streamer’s films earned nominations, “Don’t Look Up,” “tick, tick…BOOM!” and “The Power of the Dog.” The rest of the Theatrical Motion Picture category included “Belfast,” “CODA,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza” and “West Side Story.”

This was disappointing news for “Nightmare Alley,” “No Time To Die” and “The Lost Daughter,” but all is not lost. The PGA is a major indicator of a film’s chances of landing a Best Picture nomination, except when it isn’t. Let’s look at the past few years shall we? In 2021, just seven of the eight Oscar nominees lined up (it’s worst showing in some time). In 2020, all nine Oscar nominees were PGA nominees (“Knives Out” was the extra 10th PGA nom). In 2019, all eight Oscar nominees were PGA nominees (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “A Quiet Place” didn’t make the cut). In 2018, seven of the 10 Oscar noms were PGA noms and two other Best Picture nominees (“Darkest Hour,” “Phantom Thread”) didn’t make the PGA cut.

But, let’s go back to the two years when both the PGA and AMPAS each honored 10 films. In 2010, only eight films were the same (“A Serious Man” and “The Blind Side” didn’t earn PGA nods). In 2011, only nine films were the same (“Winter’s Bone” only earned an AMPAS nod). In the decade since AMPAS membership has become more international than ever before. We would suggest not counting on these PGA nods on lining up completely with the films that The Academy nominates. The precedent for 100% accuracy simply isn’t there.

On the television side, the nominees were slightly more predictable. “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Squid Game,” “Succession” and “The Morning Show” were joined by “Yellowstone,” which is having a guild breakthrough year, for Drama Series. Comedy Series nominees when to “Cobra Kai,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Hacks,” “Only Murders in the Building” and “Ted Lasso.” Limited Series contenders include “Dopesick,” “Mare of Easttown,” “The Underground Railroad,” “WandaVision” and “The White Lotus.”

The PGA Awards will be handed out on Saturday, February 26.
