Ben Wheatley To Direct Former David Fincher Project ‘Hard Boiled’ Based On Frank Miller Graphic Novel

David Fincher has had a lot of projects he’s flirted with other years, and one of them was an all-CGI adaptation of Frank Miller‘s graphic novel “Hard Boiled.” The film never came to pass, but we can think of no better heir to take up the reins than Ben Wheatley.

Deadline reports that “Free Fire” and “Kill List” director Wheatley is mounting his first major studio project with Warner Bros., and indeed it will be “Hard Boiled.” The movie may also see Wheatley’s “High-Rise” star Tom Hiddleston taking the lead role. As he does with most of his projects, the filmmaker will be writing the script too, with the trippy story revolving around an insurance investigator and tax collector. Carl Seltz is a suburban insurance investigator, a loving husband, and devoted father. Nixon is a berserk, homicidal tax collector racking up mind-boggling body counts in a diseased urban slaughterhouse. Unit Four is the ultimate robot killing machine — and the last hope of the future’s enslaved mechanical servants. And they’re all the same psychotic entity.

Generally speaking, Wheatley tends to work quickly, but that’s when he’s working with indie budgets. Who knows when “Hard Boiled” might surface or how long it’ll take, especially going through the checks and balances and worries that come with dealing with layers of the Hollywood approval process. But here’s hoping he gets to go off into his own little corner and create something as Wheatley-esque as we’ve come to expect.
