'Blair Witch' Is Back In Surprise Trailer For Adam Wingard's New Horror Film

When the first trailer for Adam Wingard‘s “The Woods dropped this year, some were unimpressed by what looked like another run of the mill horror flick set in the forest. Did we really need one of those? Well, last night at San Diego Comic Con, a screening of the film revealed it to be a sequel to “The Blair Witch Project.” But the question still is: do we really need one of those?

The original movie was a bonafide horror hit in 1999, and already spurred a sequel, 2000’s “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2” directed Joe Berlinger, which itself had a TV counterpart, “Shadow Of The Blair Witch.” But neither was as well received as its predecessor, which is where Wingard’s movie steps in. His movie will follow James Allen McCune, who will have his own creepy found footage adventure, going into the woods to figure out what happened to his sister Heather. Lots of jump scares and bad lighting ensue. Here’s the official synopsis:

A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence.  Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

“Blair Witch” opens on September 16th.
