Box Office: 'Captain America: Civil War' Beats Newcomers To Take Top Spot Again

After a blockbuster debut in North America last weekend, there wasn’t much doubt that “Captain America: Civil War” would once again ride to the top of the box office. The newcomers didn’t pose much of a threat, and the only question, really, was just how big the second weekend for Marvel‘s latest hit would be.

Well, the numbers have rolled in and ‘Civil War’ added $72.5 million to its domestic bank account, another $84.2 million internationally, bringing its total global haul to date to $940 million. Bear in mind, this is after two weeks in domestic release; “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” which is now out of the top 10, is not likely to crack $900 million. Just sayin’. As for Marvel, they’re rolling in the green, with ‘Civil War’ likely to crack $1 billion by Friday, and the franchise as a whole has now topped $10 billion across 13 movies. Wowsers.

Things were less exciting elsewhere at the box office. “Money Monster” landed with a respectable but not particularly great $15 million opening. You’d have to go back to “Three Kings” and “The Pelican Brief” to see these kind of debut numbers for George Clooney and Julia Roberts, though as a director, it’s the best bow Jodie Foster has ever received. But the number is about what you’d expect for a mid-budget drama/thriller aimed at adults about the misdeeds of Wall Street. This one will likely play to the core crowd before leaving the multiplex.

Meanwhile, the $4 million horror film “The Darkness,” starring Kevin Bacon, scared up $5.1 million, so I guess that’s a success? It seems they keep making this cheapie scare flicks so they can eventually make money on cable.

In limited release, A24 had a great weekend with the excellent “The Lobster” hauling in $188,000 on four screens, for a $47,024 PSA. Whit Stillman‘s “Love & Friendship” also did well with $135,000 on four screens, for a $33,750 PSA.
