Box Office: 'Captain America: Civil War' Has Huge, Heroic Opening Weekend

There was never any doubt that “Captain America: Civil War” was going to have a terrific opening weekend; the only question was just how big it would be. Already bowing to gangbusters numbers overseas last month, Disney and Marvel‘s latest blockbuster was rolling into the weekend on strong buzz and great reviews. And of course, all that positive momentum paid off handily.

“Captain America: Civil War” hauled in $181.7 million, about $10 million shy of the debut of “Avengers: Age Of Ultron.” It’s the fifth-best domestic debut ever, and rather incredibly, ‘Civil War’ has earned more in its opening weekend than “Captain America: The First Avenger” did in its entire domestic run. Damn. And internationally, the film took in another $400 million this weekend, with the movie now sitting with $678 million total in the bank, and many more weeks in theaters to come. So it’s yet another big home run for Disney and Marvel, who are in the midst of an unbeatable streak.

As you might expect, the rest of the industry didn’t dare go up against a titan, so the box office was otherwise pretty quiet, with no other wide releases. But for those who prefer their movies a little more arthouse in flavor, there were movies to choose from. The sunny, rock ‘n’ roll “A Bigger Splash” led the limited-release crowd, taking in $110,000 across five screens, with $22,00o PSA. Jacques Audiard‘s “Dheepan” did $22,760 in a pair of theaters for a $11,380 PSA. Feel-good documentary “Dark Horse” earned $4,891 on three screens, and rather dismally, the “Star Wars” documentary “Elstree 1976” could only muster $3,000 on 14 screens for a dreadful $214 PSA.
