‘Cameraperson’ Director Kirsten Johnson Says Her Next Film Is Like 'Groundhog Day' & 'Jackass'

Kirsten Johnson‘s “Cameraperson” (one of our 22 Best Documentaries Of 2016) told her tale as a filmmaker and storyteller by cleverly using outtakes from the various projects she’s worked on over the years. It was a movie that surprised many with its depth, and Johnson has another intriguing project on her plate, one that offers some fascinating influences.

In an interview with Variety, the director shared details about what she was working on next, and it’s another personal story, but one containing some very big, comedic inspirations.

“I’m working with [‘Transparent’ creator] Jill Soloway and her sister on the pilot of a hybrid project. And aside from that I’m beginning to work with my father [who is featured in ‘Cameraperson’] on another hybrid project, an observational documentary which I hope will be a hilarious heartbreaker,” Johnson revealed. “You know ‘Groundhog Day,’ Buster Keaton, Jacques Tati and ‘Jackass‘? That will be the spirit of it. Before I lose my dad, I want to keep him for the future. You can’t keep people from dying but you can keep them alive through films.”

Um, wow. We totally can’t wait to see that (and let’s hope more details surface on that Jill Soloway project too). It sounds like Johnson is again bending the boundaries of the documentary form, and we’re eager to see the result.
