It’s rare that a film announcement that doesn’t include a title or any hint at the plot would still be enough to provide some real excitement for cinephiles. Yet, just the mention of Christian Bale and David O. Russell is enough to get us hyped for whatever is coming.
According to Deadline, Christian Bale is set to star in a new film from writer-director David O. Russell. Again, there’s no mention of a title and no plot specifics were given, but considering the history the two men share, the idea of them teaming up for another project is enough to have us ready to buy a ticket.

For film fans, “The Fighter” might be the first film that comes to mind when you think of Bale and Russell. That film starred Bale as the brother of a boxer, played by Mark Wahlberg. “The Fighter” would go on to be nominated for seven Oscars, earning two wins, including one for Bale as Best Supporting Actor.
Three years later, the filmmaker teamed up with the actor yet again for even more Oscar love with “American Hustle.” Though the film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including one nom for Bale as Best Actor, ‘Hustle’ would go home empty-handed. But even still, Bale and Russell are now two-for-two as far as films go.
In the interim, since 2013, Bale has gone on to get even more acclaim. In 2016, he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the film “The Big Short.” And he landed yet another Oscar nomination in 2019 for the film “Vice.” Last year, though it didn’t get him an Academy Award nomination, Bale’s work in “Ford v. Ferrari” is thought to be one of the best performances of the year.

As for Russell, his last feature film was the 2015 movie, “Joy,” starring Jennifer Lawrence. That didn’t necessarily receive the similar acclaim that folks just assumed a David O. Russell film would receive, but nevertheless, it was a solid film and one that continued to prove that the director is one of the best around.
No word on when this new film might be released, but production is expected to begin in April.
