Christopher McQuarrie To Direct 'Edge Of Tomorrow' Sequel, Work On Script Underway

Edge of TomorrowEven with megastar Tom Cruise selling the movie, audiences had a trouble grasping the concept of "Edge Of Tomorrow," which opened at number three during the summer of 2014. And while the picture eked its way to $100 million domestic, it did nearly three times that overseas, and home video has certainly helped the sci-fi flick earn some greater appreciation. Talk of a follow-up has brewing for a while now, and the wheels are finally in motion.

Deadline reports that Cruise’s bud Christopher McQuarrie ("Valkyrie," "Jack Reacher," "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation"), who co-wrote the first film, will be back to direct, with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse ("Race") writing the script. But undoubtedly they will be getting some input from McQuarrie, who last summer was saying the follow-up would be easier for the studio to work with from a promotional point-of-view.

"’Edge of Tomorrow‘ was incredibly difficult to market. From the look of the film…to the title of the film…whether it was [the name of the source material] ‘All You Need Is Kill‘ or ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’ But the humor in the film took a good 35 minutes to really dawn on you — the movie really sneaks up on you and takes this sudden left turn. The movie didn’t have the moments that a trailer needs to tell you, ‘This is the experience you’re going to have,’ " he said.

So, will we be looking at a much more streamlined action flick for the sequel? Kinda sounds like it.

No word yet on when it might lens, and given how things are going over at Warner Bros. these days, they aren’t saying yes to anything unless they love the script they see from Shrapnel and Waterhouse. Next up from Cruise and McQuarrie is "Mission: Impossible 6," which will shoot this summer.

Update: Oops, looks like the trades made a mistake. McQuarrie says Doug Liman will be directing.
