CW’s ‘Riverdale’ Already Renewed For Second Season

Coming as a surprise to no one, CW’s dark, “Twin Peaks”-esque Archie reboot “Riverdale” has been picked up for a second season. While not posting incredible ratings, the series has received good reviews and is slowly building its audience, with gains in DVR and online streaming viewership. However, even with modest ratings, there has already been plenty of talk of a new season.

Over the weekend weekend, producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke at Coast-to-Coast Comic-Con where he said the series would be dropping season two hints during the upcoming season finale. “We’ll be teasing in the big bad for season 2. It’s someone who has long, deep ties to the Archie universe. It’s definitely a character people know. I think it’s a character that people won’t see coming,” said Aguirre-Sacasa.

Soon after the series’ premiere this year, Aguirre-Sacasa also was heavily hinting that the CW network would be interested in expanding their Archie empire to include a potential new series, possibly a dark reboot of “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.” Obviously, to do this would require “Riverdale” to stick around for the foreseeable future.

“Riverdale” continues its first season Thursdays on CW. [EW]
