David Ayer Keeps Door Open For Sequel To Netflix's 'Bright'

Netflix doesn’t fail very often, but “Bright” sure looks like it’s going to be an expensive mistake for the streaming service. The company’s first original blockbuster, with the budget to match, has been viewed mostly as a curiosity thus far. Certainly, the trailers haven’t made the kind of impression Netflix has been hoping for, with its ridiculous high-concept involving humans, orcs, and fairies all co-existing.  Not to mention, it has a string of clunky, ‘buddy movie’ one-liners. However, Netflix data will likely determine if there are more adventures in this world, and it’s something director David Ayer isn’t ruling out entirely.

“Let’s see what the audience says after it opens. If the audience wants another one who knows,” he told THR.

“Were there to be another film, there’s certainly enough material unexplored within the world that David and [screenwriter] Max [Landis] have created where we can continue to explore it,” producer Eric Newman added.

It’s a cagey answer from Ayer, who likely doesn’t want to put the cart too far in front of the horse. However, Will Smith — who worked with the director previously on “Suicide Squad” — is positively amped about “Bright,” and credits Netflix for rolling the project when the rest of Hollywood likely wouldn’t.

“What’s great with Netflix, this is the type of movie you couldn’t have even made anywhere else,” the actor enthused. “This is a rated-R hard, violent $100-plus million-dollar movie. No studio is making that. For Netflix, it’s like an outlet for a kind of creation that you wouldn’t be able to do anywhere.”

Well, we’ll see if that risk pays off when “Bright” arrives on December 22nd, but seriously, just look at this clip….
