If at first you do not mega-succeed, try, try again. This is of course the studio motto and it's changing whether you bomb or not; see the post-Nolan "Batman" films that will eventually happen and the upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man" reboot series. But in the meantime, many studios are concentrating on their failures. Sony just re-tried (and failed) with the "Ghost Rider" series, 20th Century Fox is attempting to get the "Fantastic Four" series back on track, Marvel might try "The Hulk" again (third time's the charm), and Fox once again is also hoping to start their "Daredevil" series over again (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, and director Mark Steven Johnson buried the first one in the ground rather quickly; hey, at least the stars got a family out ot it).
By now you already know that filmmaker David Slade — his best film probably being the underrated "30 Days of Night," his worst being "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" — has been slated to direct this do-over. But those fans eagerly awaiting a story about a blind trial lawyer who fights crime in Hell's Kitchen, New York with the use of super-human abilities and senses heightened by exposure to radiation (no, we don't make this shit up), well, you're gonna have to wait a bit longer.
So, while "Fringe" writer and co-producer Brad Caleb Kane ("Brooklyn's Finest") was hired to write the script last summer, Fox has already tasked another writer to do a pass, David James Kelly. A writer/producer/director, Kelly's credits include many shorts, including "Stay Still," "Vulgar Knowledge" and "Cocktales." How these credits apply to the "Daredevil" story? Your guess is as good as ours.
As previously reported, this "Daredevil" film will center on the popular Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli "Born Again" story arc, wherein antagonist The Kingpin uncovers the superhero’s secret identity and makes his life a living hell. Sounds like a story that's better suited to a sequel and not what we assume will have to be at least part origin story again, but we hope they know what they're doing. No release date has been set and we assume Fox is likely going to try and get this one right before they rush it onto screens. But hey, we've been wrong before. [Deadline]
