The Duffer Brothers Say The Return Of Eleven In 'Stranger Things' Season 2 Is "Up In The Air"

**Spoilers ahead** The season one finale of “Stranger Things” wrapped up on a tantalizing note, and we’re not talking about the slug that Will coughs up. Instead, it was Chief Jim Hopper heading into the woods on a wintry night, and leaving a Tupperware container and plastic wrapped Eggos in a box in the woods. Was Eleven, who seemingly gave her life to the defeat the Demogorgon, still alive? Well, the show’s writing and directing team, Matt and Ross Duffer, aren’t giving any easy answers.

Chatting with EW, the duo shared some secrets of what’s ahead for the recently announced season two, and confirmed that Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and the rest of that gang will be back. As for the beloved Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown?

“We don’t know about Eleven,” Ross Duffer said. “We leave that up in the air.” Oh man, that will certainly leave a lot of fans anxious.

The pair also confirm, as they have in the past few months, that they are eager to explore more of The Upside Down, but it’s the influence of James Cameron and the revelation that the story will expand outside of Hawkins, Indiana that is most intriguing.

“I know movie sequels get a lot of s—, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different,” Matt Duffer said. “There’s ‘Temple of Doom,’ ‘Aliens,’ ‘Terminator 2.’ I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”

“I will say the opening scene [of the premiere] does not take place in Hawkins,” he added.

“Stranger Things” season 2 will air in 2017, and it’s safe to say the Duffers will have plenty of surprises up their sleeve.
