The Dresden Dolls are a great live band that are able to make their two members sound like five. This DVD of their set at The Paradise in Boston, MA on June 5, 2005 gives the at home viewer a shot to realize just how great this band is.
The played ten songs in just over an hour. With the music being as good as it is, it was made even better due to the direction of Michael Pope. The shots were great, using different film grains to give some angles a different looks; and the cuts were spot on. They were also able to drop one member in the background of a shot of the other one (which would put one behind the other), which I loved seeing.
Brian Viglione is such a fun drummer to watch, so I was eagerly awaiting his shots. Some of the standout tracks of the set include...hell, all of them are great.
The extras on here are relatively entertaining. There are bonus live videos of "Coin Operated Boy" and "Girl Anarchronism," as well as beautifully directed videos of "Girl Anarchronism" and "Coin Operated Boy." There is also a "Life in the Day" feature, which shows the day leading up to their performance. This feature starts out incredibly boring (getting out of bed, doing yoga), which made me realize just how boring everyone actually is for a good portion of their lives.
The action picks up a little as Brian has to figure out how to get drum equipment for their tour of Europe (which is reenacted in a cool puppet show), and the pre show events, shedding light on their dedicated fan base. A dude made chocolates to pass out to the crowd while another guy crossed an ocean to check the show out, and there were the typical dressed up like Halloween people who make Dresdon Dolls shows such an event.
I found this DVD for $8, which is an amazing score. Being relatively cheap and highly entertaining, there is no reason for you not to pick this up.
