The Simpsons-Season 5
Fox

The Simpsons have been my favorite show since I watched the episode where they bought a camper and got lost in the woods (people thought Homer was Big Foot, Maggie befriended a bear) in my cousin's room back when I was nine. I don't remember what we were doing (he was a lot older than I was and was probably beating me up or making fun of me, since thats pretty much all they did), but I distinctly remember him saying "Time to watch The Simpsons." I watched it with him and have been a die hard fan ever since.

My only complaints about the first four DVDs were the fact that they were only released once a year. Since the show is currently in its 16th season, it would take forever to collect the entire series. Plus, I watch all the episodes and commentary in about a week. Season 5 came out the Tuesday before Christmas, a genious move on their part and a perfect stocking stuffer. I was just stoked that I didn't have to wait until June for Season 5 to bless my DVD player.

So far, all the seasons have been golden, and this is the season with some of the episodes that stuck in my head ever since the first time I saw them. Some of those classic and memorable episodes include "Cape Feare" ("Don't forget, you are Mr. Thompson."/"Gotcha."/"Hello, Mr. Thompson."-silence), "Rosebud," "Bart Gets Famous," "Homer and Apu" ("Who needs the Quickie Mart?") and "Bart Gets an Elephant" (remember Stampy?). All of the episodes are incredible and being able to watch these episodes whenever I want to is an incredible feeling.

The commentaries are always funny, top notch and very educational. Matt Groening is on every commentary and is joined by such greats as Al Jean, James L. Brooks, Conan O'Brian, David Mirkin and a slew of other writers and actors (and a surprise appearance by Jon Lovitz). I find the commentaries as interesting as the episodes, as you learn about Conan getting his own late night talk show and the the crew from the first four years go their separate ways, forcing the creators to regroup (which I think they pulled off well).

Any Simpsons DVD will be a smart purchase and well worth your $30-$40. This DVD is packed full of hours of entertainment that I still watch regularly three months after I got it for Christmas.
