Edgar Wright Says Sony Wants A ‘Baby Driver’ Sequel

If you’re lamenting the lack of original summer blockbuster thrills, then you clearly haven’t seen “Baby Driver.” The latest from director Edgar Wright is the best box office opener of his career, and deservedly so, as he packs all his skills as a writer, director and spectacle-maker into one compact, hugely enjoyable package. Audiences have been thrilled by the film just as much as critics, and word of mouth has been strong, so it’s not a big surprise that Sony wants a sequel. However, what might be more surprising is that Wright is considering it.

“The studio have asked me to think about writing a sequel and it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to because I think there’s somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters,” Wright shared with Empire. “Baby has got to a new place.”

Certainly, the ending of the film could be seen as marking the beginning of a new chapter for the titular character, though it works just as well as a solid conclusion.

“Most sequels you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there’s somewhere deeper for them to go. I think with ‘Baby Driver’ there’s more that you can do in that realm, and I sort of have an idea that if you did another [film] you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way so he’s not the apprentice anymore,” Wright added.

Baby taking full command of his criminal life is an intriguing prospect, but don’t get too excited just yet. Wright has never been super keen on treading the same ground again, and just a few weeks ago offered this outlook on sequels.

“I think the thing with sequels is that I’ve always been looking for what’s next? And the thing with any movie is, it’s going to take up at least two years of your life. Maybe three. So, when you’ve got youth on your side, and I’m already in my forties now, it’s like, I guess I would rather be telling new stories than revisiting old ones,” he said.
