Eighth Grade And Can You Ever Forgive Me Surprise At WGA Awards

In simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles, the Writers Guild of America handed out the winners for the 2019 WGA Awards.  Many of the winners were expected (shocker, “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” wins again!) but in the film categories, the top winners were major surprises.

Bo Burnham’s script for “Eighth Grade,” which did not earn an Oscar nomination, beat major competition from “Roma” and “Green Book” in the Original Screenplay category. Oscar favorite, “The Favourite,” was not eligible.  Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty took Adapted Screenplay for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” surging past favorites including “BlacKkKlansman” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.”  The former is still expected to take Oscar next Sunday.  In another surprise, “Bathtubs Over Broadway” won the Documentary Screenplay.

On the television side, “Barry” took two honors; New Series and Episodic Comedy.  “Mrs. Maisel” won Comedy Series, “The Americans” won Dramatic Series.  “Homeland” took Episodic Drama.
