Ernie Hudson Suggests The Original Cast Will Return In Upcoming 'Ghostbusters' Sequel

Just last week, there was no hope for a new “Ghostbusters” film and it appeared as if the franchise was currently dead. But now, not only do we know that filmmaker Jason Reitman is going to tackle his father’s old franchise but we actually saw a teaser debut and know that a reboot-quel, set in the same universe as the original, is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2020. And according to Ernie Hudson, one of the stars of 1984’s “Ghostbusters,” there might be some familiar faces showing up as well.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Hudson was asked about the possibility of him appearing alongside the original actors in the new film. His answer is a little confusing, but it sure does sound like fans of the classic comedy will be in luck.

Hudson started by recognizing that Harold Ramis, one of the original “Ghostbusters” actors, has passed away and obviously won’t be making an appearance. “And I miss [Ramis], but his spirit is there. But Ivan Reitman is there and everybody is in. Now whether the studio will do it, I’m the guy who sits by the phone and waits for the call. So if they call, I’ll answer. If not, I’ve got other stuff that I’m doing,” said Hudson.

Judging by that quote, it would appear that the actor thinks that all the original actors and the original director are all onboard to come back in some capacity, but it’s up to the studio to make it happen. Clearly, with the blowback from Paul Feig’s all-female reboot, the studio is going to go out of its way to show fans of the original that this new “Ghostbusters” takes place in the classic’s universe. What easier way to do that than to have the characters from the 1984 film show up?

And in regards to that Feig movie that experienced a ton of outrage from classic fans, the actor has some thoughts. “Well, I love the ladies who were a part of that movie. I’m a fan of all theirs. I think they did a wonderful job. I don’t quite think it was… there’s a vibe or feeling that ‘Ghostbusters’ has; it was a little bit different,” said Hudson. “It was uniquely theirs, which I guess it should have been, but I wanted to see something sort of extended from… This was a reboot.”

He continued, “I would like to have seen a movie that takes place 30 years into the future, which is where we are. So I loved it, I think they did a wonderful job, I enjoyed the movie, but I’d like to see us bring the real Ghostbusters, whatever that means. No disrespect to Paul Feig and I enjoyed working with him, but I just think it was different.”

With a release date just over a year away, production on this new “Ghostbusters” film should be beginning soon. We should fully expect to hear casting confirmations in the weeks to come. And then we’ll find out if Hudson, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd are truly going to appear.
