The world of movie scores has never been more fascinating. Once the domain of big name composers, the field has expanded to included musicians and artists whose talents offer more than just traditional classical fare, which makes Alex Somers work on the upcoming “Captain Fantastic” one to keep an eye and ear out for. An engineer, mixer, and musician in his own right, who has collaborated with Jónsi Birgisson from Sigur Ros in Jónsi and Alex, in addition to doing extensive studio work, he strikes out on his own for this indie film and results are uniquely compelling.

Starring Viggo Mortensen, Frank Langella, Ann Dowd, Erin Moriarty, Missi Pyle, Kathryn Hahn and Steve Zahn, the film follows a devoted father who dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults, living with them in the remote Pacific Northwest. But when a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent and brings into question everything he’s taught them. And in our exclusive preview, you can hear that the music was a part of the movie winning the Un Certain Regard directing prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
“Captain Fantastic” opens in cinemas on July 8th. The soundtrack will be released by Lakeshore Records on digital and CD, with vinyl arriving courtesy of Invada Records.
