This year, it seems horror is coming in some very familiar flavors. You can try out a sequel in “The Conjuring 2,” go into the woods with, uh, “The Woods,” or get spooked by whatever is in the dark in “Lights Out.” And sometimes the biggest scares come from the simplest ideas.

Directed by Daryl F. Sandberg and starring Teresa Palmer, the premise is pretty simple: the lights go out, and bad things start to happen. But hopefully, there’s a smart story to back this up, along with some genuine chills, and not just a series of jump scares meant to make us spill our jumbo sized popcorn and soda.
