‘Fast Color’ Trailer: Gugu Mbatha-Raw Stars In A New Spin On The Superhero Genre

The massive success of the superhero genre throughout the 21st century, most notably with the unprecedented domination of Marvel Studios over the last ten years, has led to a lot of different approaches and changes to the classic structure of the superhero film, most commonly in independent films. From “Midnight Special” and “Super” to “Paper Man” and the upcoming “Brightburn,” these subversive takes on the superhero formula do their best to turn the genre on its head, to varying degrees of success. The latest to tackle this set-up is “Fast Color.

Directed by “Miss Stevens” director Julia Hart and co-written by Hart and her husband Jordan Horowitz (infamously known as the “La La Land” producer who announced “Moonlight” as Best Picture), “Fast Color” looks to put the superhero legend in the context of common contemporary issues instead of Earth-threatening conflict. The film’s synopsis is short on details, but the film seems to introduce an interesting take on superpowers that puts them in the backseat to a grounded family drama.

A woman is forced to go on the run when her superhuman abilities are discovered. Years after having abandoned her family, the only place she has left to hide is home.

The film predominantly got good reviews out of its premiere at South by Southwest last year, where it was picked up for distribution by Codeblack Films, which primarily targets African-American audiences. In particular, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, continuing a breakout 2018 with appearances in “The Cloverfield Paradox,” “Irreplaceable You,” and “A Wrinkle in Time,” received widespread praise for her performance. Starring alongside her is David Strathairn, Lorraine Toussaint, Saniyya Sidney, and Christopher Denham.

“Fast Color” will be released on March 29, just a few weeks after Marvel’s big female-led superhero film, “Captain Marvel.” You can watch the trailer below.
