This is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. Steve Carell (who also co-wrote the film) may just reach Adam Sandler fame, even though this is a Rated R film. There's enough sexual humor and well placed curse words to last a lifetime, and they all sound original.
Carell plays Andy, a-like the title says-40 year old virgin who works at an electronics store and has enough rare toy collectables to make any random "comic book guy" cum themselves. He lives a pretty sheltered life, but he seems content with the life he leads. He watches Survivor with his upstairs neighbors, and has a slamming weekend full of tuba playing, action figure painting and egg salad sandwich making.
Andy gets trapped into revealing his lack of sexual experience while at a poker game (its kind of funny that a revelation like that is made during a game called "poker") with his coworkers David (Paul Rudd), Jay (Romany Malco) and Cal (Seth Rogan). In addition to telling everyone Andy works with, they also make it their goal to get him laid, which proves to be a much tougher task than originally anticipated, due to Andy's shyness, respect for and bad luck with women.
Andy eventually meets somebody he likes, and the two hit it off (though it takes awhile between their initial meeting and a first date). The relationship goes well until the 20th date hits, which was when the two were supposed to start plowing each other.
Carell plays Andy so well that its almost scary. He is both a likable and realistic character, making you believe that he is a person who has never had sex, and his good naturedness will put a smile on your face.
This movie stays hilarious right through the end credits. The sex jokes sound so fresh and will be constantly mimicked wherever immature people with a sick sense of humor (i.e. anyone) happen to be at that time. I expect to see "You know how I know you're gay?" jokes sweeping the nation by storm. I wouldn't even be surprised if George W. Bush uses that line to take a swipe at Osama Bin Laden.
My one complaint is the pot jokes. I don't understand them, as they seem very pointless. Watching Andy smoke pot out of an apple is not funny, although I'm not a stoner, so that might be hysterical to other people.
If this doesn't win an award for Best Comedy, then Hollywood deserves to get nuked. "The 40 Year Old Virgin" is a non stop laugh riot that may just make you fall out of your seat. To make it even better, the old people that sat right next to me (even though there were numerous empty seats) and spent a lot of the movie talking, left after about a half hour.
