The Final Season Of 'The Leftovers' Won't Air Til 2017, 'Birdman' Star Lindsay Duncan Joins The Cast

The HBO drama “The Leftovers” is currently filming its final season, and has announced actress Lindsay Duncan is joining the ensemble cast. THR reports that the details of Duncan’s role are being kept under wraps, including the number of episodes in which she’ll appear. A veteran British actress of stage and screen, Duncan got a new boost recently thanks to giving a brilliant performance in “Le Week-End,” playing the fearsome theater critic in “Birdman,” and most recently appearing in “Alice Through the Looking Glass.”

While HBO is keeping mum on the details of the upcoming season or of Duncan’s character, fans now know they still have to wait a while longer before the show’s return. The third and final season of “The Leftovers” is set to premiere sometime in 2017. It seems later than expected, but actually the extended break between seasons is normal for the series. There was more than a year between the premiere of the first and second seasons.

In May, ‘Leftovers’ began production of its new season in Texas, but has now moved to Australia to finish. Previously, co-creator Damon Lindelof talked about the final eight episodes, saying “More than anything else, I want to approach the ending of ‘The Leftovers’ with confidence. Even if we fall flat on our faces and everybody hates it, it’s better than hedging or trying to be all things to all people or saying we’re going to be one thing and then at the last minute basically cut bait and be another thing. People want consistency in the storytelling.”

Lindelof has a history of dealing with fan backlash over a series finale. He was the co-creator and showrunner of “Lost.” That series’ finale will go down in history as one of the most polarizing television-show endings.

“The Leftovers” was created by Lindelof with Tom Perrotta, and it stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, and Liv Tyler.
