You might wind up being cut from his movie or spending days on set to have your role reduced to a fleeting glimpse in the background of an innocuous scene, but actors have no problem lining up to work with Terrence Malick, and “Weightless” — now titled “Song To Song” — is no different. Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch, and Holly Hunter are among those who signed up for the director’s latest, and the first look at the long developing movie is here.
Offering something a bit different from the director, who shot the project partially during Austin City Limits fest, the film tracks intersecting love triangles set against the Austin music scene, in a story dealing with sexual obsession, betrayal and rock ‘n roll (indeed, Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Iggy Pop, Florence and the Machine, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are all expected to appear). While many have reduced Malick’s recent output to a combination of twirling cameras and whispered poetry, you never really know what you’re going to get, which is what always makes his work so exciting.
