International 'G.I. Joe' Trailer: A Campy Summer Blockbusting Classic? Mmm, Maybe Not So Much

From The Director Of “The Mummy” Oh yeah, now you’re impressed.

FilmSchoolRejects points us to the international trailer for “G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra,” which begs two questions. Does “Wolverine” have competition as being one of the worst blockbuster tentpoles of the year and can a film possibly have worse special effects that then Gavin Hood-directed mutant film? All incredibly good questions and the trailer for ‘G.I. Joe,’ does raise this as viable possibility.

Actually, it also makes us ask rhetorically, will we be able to make it through the summer without unintentionally laughing our heads off? First off, ooof to the Eiffel Tower crashing down on innocent civillians in this trailer. Them funny-looking claws do have competition.

However, maybe “G.I. Joe” will just be geared towards being a goofy, camp classic in the vein of “Demolition Man”? Man, one hopes. You have to see it for yourself, but these “accelarator” suits look frickin’ hilarious and pretty much like a video game.

“G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra” is directed by never-times-Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Sommers, stars Channing Tatum, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Christopher Eccleston, Ray Park and a whole bunch of other actors presumably trading dignity for pay checks and is due in theaters August, 7 2009. Yikes.
