‘The Guard’ & ‘War on Everyone’ Helmer John Michael McDonagh Writing & Directing 8-Hour True Crime HBO Miniseries

True crime is all the rage at the moment on television, with the sagas of O.J. Simpson and JonBenet Ramsay getting a fresh airing, and I can only imagine it’s a matter of time until someone digs up the Menendez Brothers case again for some salacious viewing. Well, HBO isn’t going to be left behind, and while they scored the fictional law and order tale “The Night Of,” they are gearing up something a little more ripped from the headlines, and have brought another major talent under their umbrella.

The Guard,” “Calvary,” and “War On Everyone” helmer John Michael McDonaugh has revealed his next project is longform TV.

“I’ve got two films in different stages of development, but it looks like what’s going to go next is a HBO miniseries,” McDonagh told Yahoo. “It’s about 8 hours, too much work, so I’m going to have to write 8 hours worth of TV, but it’s based on a book, so at least I have that to go with.”

“And then I have to direct the bloody thing as well,” he quipped.

What is it? McDonagh wouldn’t say, but teased that it’s based on a book, and that there’s also a rival project brewing, hence all the secrecy. But needless to say, the chance to see him bring his particularly acidic brand of drama and comedy to TV is very promising.

His next film, “War On Everyone,” will be released by Saban Films, but no date has been set just yet.
