Guillermo del Toro Has Talked With Lucasfilm, But Probably Won't Make A 'Star Wars' Movie

Sometimes, you can’t really win with the press. Guillermo del Toro recently sat down with Collider for an extended interview, talking about almost every topic under the sun, but all antennas stood up straight when the conversation circled around “Star Wars.” The director had once tossed around the idea (prefaced by saying “This is not real — this is me as a fat geek just geeking out and talking about it”) of doing a “The Godfather” style story and movie about Jabba The Hutt. Of course, the internet made great hay out of the quote, which explains why when going to a galaxy far, far away came up again, del Toro was reluctant to say too much.

The filmmaker stated up front that whatever he said would be blown up, and indeed it has, but it doesn’t really sound like he has the time or necessarily wants to make a “Star Wars” movie. However, he has met with the people in charge of the property.

“There are some characters that are great,” del Toro said. “And I have talked to Kathleen Kennedy and John Knoll about ideas. But you know, I want to do my sh**. I want to do it first. I’m veering a lot towards animation. I love animation.”

It bears repeating: “I want to do my sh**.” So, while I’d watch a del Toro-directed movie about Jabba The Hutt in a heartbeat, I’m not going to hold my breath. He really wants to pursue his own projects, and that’s also pretty exciting too.

del Toro’s next movie, “The Shape Of Water,” will open later this year.
