Colin Farrell loved the first season of “True Detective,” but when he heard a second season was coming with an entirely new cast that would have to live up to season one, he thought, “Ooh, good luck to the actors that are doing that.” But, after Farrell read the scripts when he was offered a lead part, he was a goner. ““Oh, God, it was such good writing. … it’s extraordinary stuff,” he said Thursday night at the Maui Film Festival via Variety.
Season one, in case you’re living under a rock, centered on two very different detectives—one with a very darkly philosophical, existential bent—on the hunt for a serial killer over two decades. Season two sounds very dissimilar and it features four lead characters. How different is it?

“Aesthetically, it’s very different,” Farrell said. “There are four main characters, as opposed to the two-character structure that’s in the first piece. But it’s a lot of the same sensibilities, and a lot of the characters are struggling with the same kind of existential quandaries and questions that are related to meaning and purpose and the burying of the darkness that may be in your past.”

Starring: Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, season two centers on a bizarre murder that brings together three law-enforcement officers (Farrell, McAdams and Kitsch) and a career criminal (Vaughn), each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California.
Two new TV spot promos for the show has arrived. One centers on Colin Farrell’s Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County and his dubious sense of morality. The other focuses more of an overview of the entire season. “True Detective” season 2 premieres June 21. The first two episodes were directed by Justin Lin. Watch the two new spots below.
