Ian McShane Spills Canine Secret About 'John Wick 2,' Talks 'Deadwood' Movie

Ian McShane is currently in a pretty good groove, appearing on the most recent episode of “Game Of Thrones” and filming the upcoming Starz series “American Gods.” But it’s still his role in “Deadwood” a decade ago that is his best loved. The good news is that HBO confirmed their commitment to a “Deadwood” movie earlier this year and David Milch is currently writing the script. And don’t worry about McShane hesitating to return —he’s ready to go. Just tell him where to show up and Al Swearengen will be there.

“[‘Deadwood’] certainly finished too early. At the time, most of us working on the show were incredulous,” the actor told EW. “It’s been announced by HBO, so its not like I’m saying it. I know for a fact David is working on the script. It’s been 10 years since it finished. [Star Timothy Olyphant’s] free from ‘Justified.’ I’m hoping they’ll make the deal soon, for two or four hours, whatever they decide on. It was a very close knit group of actors on it. We got along very well. I’m sure David will decide to set it 10 years later after the great fire or whatever happened in ‘Deadwood.’ They haven’t done the deal yet. They [were planning] to do it late this year or early next year.”

So it sounds imminent, but in light of the recent executive shakeup at HBO, I would guess it’s just taking a bit longer for contracts and schedules to be sorted out.

Meanwhile, among the other projects you can see McShane in next is the highly anticipated “John Wick: Chapter Two,” and he reveals one very important fact about the movie: “Keanu gets a new dog.” Oh hell, yes! But don’t worry, this isn’t going to be another dog vengeance movie.

“It’s all about the assassin’s code, if you like. He’s killed a Russian gangster and now there’s a contract out on him, so it’s a continuation. I loved the first one. This could be even better than the first,” McShane said. Can’t wait!

“John Wick: Chapter Two” opens on February 10, 2017.
