'Idiocracy' Returning To Theaters For 10th Anniversary Screening

For those seeking a cinematic parallel to the rise of Donald Trump as an actual presidential candidate, and what the world might look like with him in the Oval Office (the horror), many have been pointing toward Mike Judge‘s “Idiocracy.” Like “Office Space” before it, the film wasn’t much of a hit when it was first released, but has since grown in cult status, and particularly over the past year has gained cultural currency for being, if not quite prophetic, then at least a little ahead of the curve at where politics were headed in the future. Obviously, Judge’s satire is way out there (we don’t see Starbucks offering sexual favors anytime soon) but it’s also just on the nose enough to be resonant. And Alamo Drafthouse are ready to host audiences eager for a bit of levity from the election season.

The chain is teaming up with Art House Convergence Theaters and local League of Women Voters chapters to present 10th anniversary screenings of “Idiocracy” around the country.  On October 4th, the cast and crew of the film will be live in person at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica at 6:45pm for a screening of the film and a post-movie conversation, which will be broadcast to participating cinemas, with the conversation also airing on Facebook Live.

It should be a lot of fun, and a bit of a consolation prize for the satirical political ads Mike Judge had been planning with Terry Crews, who was set to reprise his “Idiocracy” role as President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Drew Herbert Camacho, that was scrapped by Fox.

“It was announced that they were anti-Trump, and I would’ve preferred to make them and then have the people decide. Terry Crews had wanted to just make some funny Camacho ads, and [screenwriter] Etan [Cohen] and I had written a few that I thought were pretty funny, and it just fell apart. I wanted to put them out a little more quietly and let them go viral, rather than people announcing we’re making anti-Trump ads. Just let them be funny first,” Judge told The Daily Beast. “Doing something satirical like that is better if you just don’t say, ‘Here we come with the anti-Trump ads!’ ”

So lament what could’ve been by checking out “Idiocracy” again on the big screen. Watch the trailer below followed by the list of participating theaters.
