'The Incredibles 2' & 'Toy Story 4' Switch Release Dates

The Incredibles 2” and “Toy Story 4” mark different sides of the sequel coin. On one hand, there are followups fans have been requesting for years (“The Incredibles 2”), and on the other, there are movies that seem to exist to keep milking a very lucrative cash cow (I thought we were done with Woody and Buzz after the near perfect trilogy capper “Toy Story 3“). But in both cases, Pixar is committed to craft and only brings movies to screens when they’re ready, and historically have had no problem pushing movies back or scrapping them altogether.

Which is a long way of saying that “The Incredibles 2” and “Toy Story 4” have switched released dates. Brad Bird‘s return to animation, and the followup to his smash hit film, will now be released a year earlier, with “The Incredibles 2” now slated to arrive on June 15, 2018. As for “Toy Story 4,” it will once again get bumped back, now landing on June 21, 2019. For the latter, it’s the latest in a string of delays, but as I wrote, Pixar won’t put it out there until they feel they have the best movie possible.

While the studio is still committed to original features (such as “Inside Out” and “The Good Dinosaur“), they’ve come to realize their bread and butter is in franchises, and three out of their next four movies will be sequels (“Cars 3,” “The Incredibles 2,” “Toy Story 4”) with 2017’s “Coco” as the standalone newcomer.
