I don't really think BOLD needs an introduction. Anyone that listens to hardcore should know that they were one of the reasons New York Hardcore had a resurgance in the late 80s. Their straight edge hardcore anthems, especially on "Speak Out," had a lot of kids (then and now) nailing themselves to the X. They released, in my opinion, their best work, "Looking Back," before their demise. But, it looks like they're back, and I'm looking forward to hearing new BOLD material.
1. Introduce yourself.
Tom: Hello I'm Tom Capone, guitarist of the New York Hardcore band BOLD.
2. What made you decide to play a few reunion shows?
Tom: Of course the nostalgia of it at first, but we have a chemistry in music knwing each other since were 13 years old we have a very deep connection. The intention was to write music and move forward also. Why give up on a good chemistry and have fun, write killer music and love what you. That's why were all in it.
Tom: I basically called Matt-vocals, to see if he was down to play and write again, and then it went from there to Tim- bass, Porcell-guitar, and newcomer Vinny-drums. We all felt it again when we hit the stage and started practicing.
3. Do you find that the friendship between band members loses a little bit after the band breaks up?
Tom: No they grow stronger because as your older and if you have a good relationship and are in a band together, your going to be surrounded with each other and interact. We happen to conect great. And from someone who's straight edge to a Hare Krishna we get along awseome. We just love playing together, I guess.
4. What memories were brough back by the preparation and release of The Search?
Tom: The last tour we did in 1989 for 2 months with Gorrilla Biscuits and JUDGE. It all led to that, because that is when we were at our pinnacle. I also notice how the stuff we did on Looking Back was advanced for it's time, post hardcore. The early band BOLD was CRIPPLED YOUTH who were so genius at age 13 recording that EP. After the release I already knew it was a stepping stone to new BOLD. It's weird.
5. Do you think music still has the same impact that it did 20 years ago when Bold was starting out?
Tom: Yes completely it does. I feel it, and all these other dudes in the scene moshing, singing along are. And to kids who are 13 and up this stuff if so much better then 90% of the crap out there now.
6. If you were a twisted evil supervillian, what would your name be?
Tom: LORD VIPER. I used to use this viper brand muscle drink before I worked out to earn that name.
7. Do you think straight edge will ever make its way into mainstream culture?
Tom: It already is. It's really big all over the world. It's still Underground and very fresh sounding music. Straight Edge by it's nature of it's no drugs etc.... can fit right in with the moral right with the mainstream. It's not a bad idea so it's going to catch on. I'd rather see kids not using dope and dying then more then anything.
8. Name one album, besides your own, that you think all kids should have in their collection.
Tom: If you had mine then get BAD BRAINS-"Rock For Light".
9. Final comments.
